iOS 7 has changed the way interface designers go about their craft. Gone are chunky gradients, deep drop shadows, 3D light reflections and textured leather surfaces. In their place we have more minimal interfaces with vibrant colors, clean icons and bold typography. Android's new design ethos continues this trend with material design and a sharp, new direction for its look and feel going forward.
Conquering Flat Design is a deep-dive into this new world of app design. Learn how the fundamental elements of digital design (alignment, proximity, color, typography) are now used to craft bold and elegant user interfaces for a new era of mobile software. The guide includes step-by-step design walkthroughs, easy to understand rules of thumb and a variety of ready-made designs you can start using in your apps today.
I’m Mike Rundle, a designer & software engineer. I’ve been designing & building websites since the mid-90s and have worked on cool projects for Nike, Mozilla, Yahoo, Intuit, Fox and tons of startups. In 2008, I started learning Objective-C and when the iPad came out two years later I launched Digital Post, a virtual newspaper app for iPad that was featured by Apple.
Since then I’ve designed and built a number of iOS apps including Interesting for iPhone which was #1 in the U.S. News category and also featured in the App Store.
I've also been a technical reviewer for various iPhone development books from O’Reilly and Wiley and have spoken about app development at conferences around the world.
I've always felt that designers should learn to write code and that developers should know the basics of great design. Design Then Code is my way of trying to make that happen.
